KUALA LUMPUR: Patients and survivors of breast cancer have a new support group in the newly-formed Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation.
Its patron Puan Sri Maniseh Adam, a stage two breast cancer survivor, said the foundation's aim was to educate women on ways to avoid the disease altogether.
“After going through this dark period and the recovery process, we do not want other women to go through the same thing,” said Maniseh in her speech.
The foundation, which was formed this February, will be taking over the outreach work from PinkRibbonR2R (Pink Ribbon Reach To Recovery) founded in 2009.
Maniseh said most of the volunteers would be breast cancer survivors and would be given training to help counsel other patients.
“We have requested the Government to help fund 1Malaysia Mammogram Buses, especially for rural women who cannot afford mammograms.
“We would like to have one bus for each of the five development corridors,” she said, adding that each bus would cost about RM2.5mil due to the diagnostic equipment on board.

The Prime Minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who launched the foundation, lauded its efforts in educating women about early breast cancer detection.
“Breast cancer remains the number one killer of women in Malaysia. Currently, 56% of cancer patients are women and 18% of them have breast cancer.
“Low awareness and taking breast cancer for granted has been identified as the reason for the increase in the mortality rate among women aged 40 and above,” she said in her speech.
